The Commissioner for Sports Development, Bayelsa State, Honourable Daniel Igali, has praised the outstanding performance of the Bayelsa contingents at the inaugural Engr Habu Gumel Weightlifting Open Championship in Abuja.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja, Honourable Igali expressed immense satisfaction with the athletes’ exceptional achievements.
Team Bayelsa dominated the championship, amassing an impressive total of 30 medals, including 17 gold, 11 silver, and 2 bronze, to secure the top position on the final medal table.
“I salute our gallant sportsmen and women who have performed exceptionally well in this championship,” said Igali. “Our athletes have showcased remarkable talent and resilience. These achievements exemplify the spirit of excellence currently in Bayelsa, and I applaud their dedication.”
Honourable Daniel Igali, a world and Olympic champion, highlighted the state government’s unwavering commitment, under the leadership of His Excellency, Governor Douye Diri, to providing the necessary support and facilities for all athletes to thrive. “This display is a reflection of His Excellency, Governor Douye Diri’s drive to ensure there is adequate provision and a conducive environment for our sportsmen and women to excel,” Igali concluded.
Meanwhile, as Team Bayelsa emerged the overall winner, Oyo secured second place with 9 gold and 3 bronze medals, while Delta finished third, accumulating 6 gold, 9 silver, and 6 bronze medals.
