Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has commended the impressive performance of Bayelsa Queens at the ongoing WAFU Zone-B Women’s Champions League tournament in Yamoussoukro, Ivory Coast. The team, currently topping Group B, has secured back-to-back victories and is poised for a strong finish in the regional competition.

Speaking after the weekly Prosperity Walk at the Samson Siasia Stadium in Yenagoa, Governor Diri expressed confidence in the team’s ability to emerge champions of the zone and represent West Africa at the CAF Women’s Champions League later this year.
“For our girls that are doing very well in faraway Ivory Coast, I congratulate them. They must come home beating the whole of the West African Zone and representing us in continental engagements,” he stated.
Bayelsa Queens have already defeated Ghana’s Police Ladies 2–1 and thrashed ASKO of Togo 3–0, securing a semifinal spot ahead of their final group match against Sam Nelly FC of Benin Republic.
Governor Diri also praised Bayelsa United for their promising start to the new Nigerian Professional Football League season, following a 1–0 away victory over Shooting Stars of Ibadan.
“They have started the season on a bright note, and I hope they will continue to keep to this winning streak both home and away,” he said. “I believe this year will be a turning point for them.”
In a call to strengthen the team’s technical capacity, the governor urged the immediate engagement of a Technical Adviser for Bayelsa United to help sustain their momentum and guide them toward continental qualification.
As both teams continue to make strides on regional and national fronts, Bayelsa’s sporting ambitions remain firmly in focus, with leadership backing and growing fan support.
