In the wake of Team Nigeria’s disappointing performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics, Dr. Daniel Igali, President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, has urged the federal government to prioritize sports development. Speaking to journalists in Asaba, he emphasized that the current reactive approach to tournaments has stunted the growth of athletics in the country.

Igali pointed out that for Nigeria to succeed on the international stage, it must refocus its efforts on crucial areas, particularly age-grade competitions. He highlighted the urgent need to eliminate age cheating, which undermines the integrity of these events.

While acknowledging the Delta State Government for hosting the Youth Games, Igali expressed concern over widespread age fraud, stating that this competition is vital for the nation’s sports future. He criticized the tendency among some states to prioritize winning at all costs, which ultimately undermines the integrity of the sport and the efforts of others.

To tackle these challenges, Igali called for a proactive approach to sports development, emphasizing that government commitment is essential. He announced that the Wrestling Federation will select the top six wrestlers from the ongoing National Youth Games in Asaba for a national training camp in Bayelsa, focusing on their intensive training and nutrition.

Additionally, Igali revealed that he will not seek re-election as president when his term ends next year, citing the federation’s constitution, which prohibits a fifth consecutive term. He stated his commitment to ensuring a smooth transition and will continue to support the growth of wrestling in Nigeria, even after leaving office.
