“We are ready to rumble!” declared Deputy Governor Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, as Bayelsa took center stage in a groundbreaking celebration that launched the Niger Delta Sports Festival torch tour. This monumental event, destined to traverse the entire Niger Delta region, began with a spectacular lighting ceremony in Yenagoa, in the presence of spirited athletes, visionary coaches, esteemed sports administrators, passionate enthusiasts, and a keen media audience.

The torch’s ceremonial debut was marked by an extraordinary moment at the iconic Samson Siasia Sports Complex. Sir Braveman Wodi, Director of Sports and Vice Chairman of Bayelsa’s Sports Committee, ignited the torch at the complex entrance, flanked by a dedicated committee, energetic athletes, and coaches. The torch was then delivered to Honorable Sports Commissioner Daniel Igali, who entrusted it to the hands of the Deputy Governor, symbolizing the state’s unwavering commitment to excellence in sports.
Senator Ewhrudjakpo, representing the Governor, underscored the profound role of sports in socioeconomic transformation—spotlighting raw talents, fostering youth empowerment, and shaping the future. With unwavering determination, he declared Bayelsa’s intent to claim a podium finish and cement its legacy at the festival.
Sports is not just a competition for us but a powerful tool for crime reduction and youth liberation,” he proclaimed, saluting the Niger Delta Development Commission for orchestrating this historic maiden edition. To the athletes, his rallying cry was clear: “Be your best, return victorious, and rest assured your government stands steadfast by your side.
Hon. Daniel Igali, Bayelsa’s Sports Commissioner and Committee Chairman, heralded the festival as a unifying force and a stepping stone to the National Sports Festival. He lauded Bayelsa’s pioneering role, lighting the Unity Torch, which epitomizes the state’s dominance in sports across Nigeria.
With participation in 17 sporting disciplines and resolute preparation for Uyo, Bayelsa’s message is bold and unequivocal: They are here to shine.

The event also saw the presence of Mrs. Itekesi Walama, representing the Niger Delta Development Commission, affirming the agency’s readiness to welcome the nine Niger Delta states to Uyo, the Akwa Ibom state capital, for this historic inaugural edition.
The torch is lit, the journey is underway, and Bayelsa leads with ambition, pride, and an unyielding spirit. Let the games begin! 🚀🎉
