The Bayelsa State Netball Association, in collaboration with the Community Sports and Educational Development Initiative (CSED-I), successfully concluded a dynamic two-day Netball Seminar for Secondary School Games Masters and Mistresses in Ogbia Local Government Area, Bayelsa State.
A Decade in the Making
This landmark event followed ten months of preparation, initiated by CSED-I’s generous donation of Netball kits and equipment in December 2024. Despite delays due to funding constraints, the Bayelsa State Government provided the necessary financial support to bring the seminar to life.
Leadership and Coordination
The seminar was led by Mrs. Catherine Sasuode, Director of Technical at the Bayelsa State Sports Council and State Netball Coordinator. She was supported by State Netball Coach Mrs. Ruth Opuene and Secretary Mr. Opusam Ekinisam Ete. Together, they developed a comprehensive programme that combined theoretical instruction with practical demonstrations.
Strategic Location
With guidance from Mr. Cornelius Ehimiaghe of CSED-I, the seminar was scheduled for 16–17 September 2025 at the Gym Hall of Federal University Otuoke. Otuoke Town was selected for its central location within Ogbia LGA, making it accessible for participants from surrounding communities.
Arrival and Kickoff
Resource person Mr. Edema Fuludu and his assistant arrived in Yenagoa on 15 September, welcomed by Mrs. Sasuode. Final preparations at the venue were overseen by Mr. Ete. On the morning of the 16th, the Bayelsa State Netball Association team and resource persons traveled to Otuoke, where 26 eager Games Masters and Mistresses awaited.
Day One: Theory and Engagement
The seminar began with high energy and interactive sessions. Although 25 schools were initially expected, 26 participants attended the theory-focused first day, engaging actively with the content.
Day Two: Practice and Passion
The second day featured practical demonstrations and recap sessions. Participants enthusiastically took to the court, applying their newly acquired skills with confidence and teamwork. Their passion for the sport was evident throughout.
Starter Pack Presentation
A key highlight was the distribution of Netball Starter Packs to participating schools. By the end of the seminar, the number of represented schools had grown to 29. Mr. Fuludu encouraged teachers to implement what they had learned and emphasized that inspection teams would visit schools to monitor progress ahead of upcoming competitions.
Participant Reflections
Attendees praised Netball as a smart and engaging sport—fun to play and exciting to watch. Their feedback underscored the seminar’s success in sparking interest and commitment to the game.
Gratitude and Acknowledgements
Mrs. Catherine Sasuode expressed sincere appreciation to all participants and extended special thanks to CSED-I for their continued support. She also commended Governor Sen. Douye Diri for the financial backing that made the seminar possible and called for sustained investment in Netball development across Bayelsa State.
Special Recognition
The contributions of Mr. Godwin Adagbo, School Sports Coordinator at the Bayelsa State Ministry of Education, were invaluable. His dedication ensured full representation from all earmarked schools, reflecting his deep commitment to youth sports development.
