Team Bayelsa kicked off their campaign with impressive victories in various sports at the ongoing South-South zonal elimination, preparing for the upcoming National Sports Festival in Abeokuta. Bayelsa triumphed in beach volleyball and men's volleyball, securing their qualification for the festival. The women's basketball team also delivered a strong performance, defeating Delta 46-31. In hockey, the men's team revived their hopes with a 2-0 win over Edo, while the women's team edged out Edo 1-0.

Team Bayelsa commenced their campaign on a high note in the ongoing South-South zonal elimination, securing victories in various sports ahead of the highly anticipated National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Bayelsa dominated in beach volleyball, defeating host Edo State with a resounding 2-0 victory. In men’s volleyball, Bayelsa showcased their prowess by overcoming Delta with a 3-0 win, with set scores of 18-25, 25-19, and 22-25. They continued their winning streak by triumphing 3-0 against Edo, with set scores of 25-21, 25-11, and 25-19, ensuring their qualification for the National Sports Festival scheduled for May.

The women’s basketball team also delivered an impressive performance, defeating Delta 46-31. They are set to face Edo State on Wednesday at 8:00 AM at Emotan College, Wire Road, Benin City. Meanwhile, the men’s hockey team initially lost to Delta 2-1 but kept their hopes alive with a 2-0 victory over Edo. The women’s hockey team secured a narrow 1-0 win against Edo and only need a draw to qualify, while the men’s team must win their next match to advance to Abeokuta.

In Abula, the Rivers team edged out Bayelsa’s male team with a 2-1 victory. However, Bayelsa bounced back with wins over Edo and Delta State, while the women’s team defeated host Edo. Unfortunately, the handball team suffered losses to Akwa Ibom and Delta State.

The men’s football team experienced a 3-0 defeat against Edo in their first encounter and a goalless draw against Delta. The women’s football event will resume on Wednesday at the Christian Club pitch off Airport Road, Benin City.

Bayelsa’s volleyball coach, Jeffrey Osas, praised his team’s determination and commitment, expressing confidence in their ability to represent the state well at the festival. Similarly, award-winning basketball coach Tony Nelson hailed his girls’ team spirit, attributing their victory to hard work and emphasizing their priority of securing qualification.
