Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State emphasized the crucial role sports plays in helping youth realize their potential during his speech at the closing ceremony of the 3rd edition of the Governor Douye Diri Wrestling Classics, held at the Samson Siasia Sports Complex in Ovom.
“Sports is one of the most important platforms for our youth to discover and develop their talents,” Governor Diri stated. “By hosting such events in our state, we are not just promoting sports, but investing in the future of our young people.”
He underscored that the state’s commitment to hosting sports festivals like the Wrestling Classics is about building raw talent across various sports. “This is a huge investment, and we will continue to invest in our youth. Without investing in sports, we won’t produce the next generation of champions, just like Hon. Commissioner for Sports Development, Dr. Daniel Igali, or legends like Jackson Bidei, Macaulay Appah, and Blessing Oborodudu,” he added.
Governor Diri highlighted the economic potential of sports, emphasizing that it is a “money-spinning investment.” He pointed out that as the state invests more in sports, it not only nurtures champions but creates millionaires out of talented athletes. “Sports has proven to be a pathway to success, and we will continue to support our youth in all sports disciplines,” he affirmed.
The governor also commended the Ministry of Sports Development, particularly Hon. Commissioner Dr. Daniel Igali, for the successful organization of the Wrestling Classics. He emphasized that wrestling is deeply embedded in the culture of Bayelsa State. “Wrestling is how we identify champions, especially from the rural areas of the state. Since 2006, Bayelsa has remained dominant in wrestling, and our state’s commitment to sports development continues to grow,” he said.
Governor Diri concluded his remarks by acknowledging the importance of education alongside sports, encouraging athletes to excel in both fields. He also presented a ₦1 million cash reward to Commonwealth Games silver medalist Ebikewenimo Welson for his outstanding performance, praising him for embodying the spirit of sportsmanship.
The governor also expressed his gratitude to the key sponsors and partners of the event, including the Chief of Defence Staff, represented by Rear Admiral Dike, the Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeleye, the Chairman of the Bayelsa State Table Tennis Association, Mr. Amiabe Stow, and the Nigeria Wrestling Federation for successfully organizing the event.
Bayelsa’s continued investment in sports is clear proof of the state’s commitment to shaping the future of its youth and creating champions both on and off the mat.
