The action-packed Bayelsa Governor’s Football Tournament, popularly known as the Prosperity Cup, witnessed another thrilling chapter on Saturday as Eternal Grace Ministry (EGM) FC emerged champions of the Yenagoa Local Government Area Finals at the Samson Siasia Stadium.

In a fiercely contested match, EGM FC edged past Bayelsa United Feeders with a 2-1 victory, showcasing grit and determination throughout the encounter.

How the Battle Unfolded

EGM FC seized the initiative in the 33rd minute through a sensational strike by Godknows Ikpe, putting the 2022 Prosperity Cup champions ahead. However, the resilient Prosperity Boys fought back in the second half, capitalizing on an error from EGM’s goalkeeper, with Stanley Amon netting the equalizer in the 55th minute.

With tensions running high, EGM’s forward Pedro Samuel struck in the 78th minute, sealing the win and sparking wild celebrations among their fans. Their triumph earned them a ₦1,000,000 prize, while the runners-up, Bayelsa United Feeders, walked away with ₦500,000.

Mayor Applauds Teams, Boosts Incentives

In a show of support, the Mayor of Yenagoa City Council, Hon. Bulodiseye Ndiware, praised both teams for their impressive performances, hailing the tournament’s impact on youth empowerment and crime reduction.

Hon. Ndiware further announced additional cash rewards—₦500,000 for the winners and ₦300,000 for the runners-up—with the promise of a ₦1,000,000 sponsorship should any of the teams advance to the tournament’s grand final.

Scouting Talent & Building Future Stars

Tournament Director-General, Mr. Ono Akpe, expressed delight over the rising quality of grassroots football, emphasizing that the upcoming scouting program will provide young talents (aged 15-20 years) an opportunity to shine. He revealed that over 100 players have already been shortlisted for selection camps, further solidifying the competition’s reputation as a breeding ground for future stars.

Adding to the excitement, Bayelsa United Technical Adviser, Ladan Bosso, noted that standout players from both teams could soon receive a call-up to join Bayelsa United’s squad.

The Journey Continues

With EGM FC now joining the ranks of Adaka FC, Crusaders FC, Citiboi FC, Nembe City, Agbere FC, and PNA FC as LGA champions, the spotlight shifts to the eagerly anticipated Round of 32—where the battle for supremacy in Nigeria’s largest grassroots football competition intensifies.
