Team Bayelsa continued their impressive performance on Saturday at the 8th National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State, tagged Asaba 2024.
As the Games entered day three, Bayelsa secured a total of four medals: one gold, two silver, and one bronze.
Atinuke Alfred Olajide clinched gold for Bayelsa in the 50 meters breaststroke event in swimming, while Ayibamieye Kachisiku won two silver medals in the 50 meters freestyle.
In table tennis, Bayelsa’s five male doubles team advanced to the final of the competition after defeating Borno State 2-1. Abraham Saviour and Plato George also secured a bronze medal in the para table tennis doubles, further boosting Bayelsa’s medal tally.
In basketball, Bayelsa’s male team beat Kwara State 5-3 to qualify for the final, where they will face Cross Rivers State on Monday in a clash for supremacy.
Earlier in the day, sisters Atinuke and Annette Alfred Olajide contributed significantly to Bayelsa’s medal haul, with both winning gold in the 100 meters breaststroke, while the team also picked up a bronze in the fives event.
As of the time of reporting, Team Bayelsa has won a total of ten medals: three gold, three silver, and four bronze, placing them third on the medal table after day three.
In interviews, gold medalists Annette and Atinuke expressed their joy at winning gold for Bayelsa, emphasizing that their goal is to build a career through swimming. Silver medalist Ayibamieye Kachisiku also praised her parents’ support, stating her determination to win more laurels for Bayelsa and represent the state on bigger stages in the future.
