Team Bayelsa delivered an outstanding performance in chess at the ongoing National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State, surpassing twenty-eight other states. The Bayelsa chess team dominated the competition, winning a total of five gold medals, one silver, and one bronze—the highest tally in any sport, closely followed by swimming with four golds, one silver, and one bronze.
The talented young athletes shone brightly, with Goodness Ekunke taking gold in the boys’ blitz event and Treasure Ebiakpo securing gold in the girls’ blitz event. Ebiakpo also earned silver in the girls’ individual competition. Bayefa Miebi contributed to the team’s success by winning gold in the girls’ individual event, while Ekunke also clinched gold in the boys’ individual category. The girls’ team secured another gold, and the boys took home a bronze, with Bayefa Oyeinkeperemo adding a bronze medal to the tally.
In athletics, Bayelsa achieved silver in the boys’ 4×100 meters relay, and Perfect Faye claimed bronze in the boys’ 200 meters. Overall, Bayelsa has now amassed two silver medals and one bronze in athletics, further solidifying their strong performance at the Games.
