Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has officially received the Torch of Unity from the National Sports Commission, marking the countdown to the 22nd National Sports Festival (NSF2025). The festival, set to take place in Abeokuta, Ogun State, from May 16 to May 30, 2025, promises to be a platform for strengthening national unity through sports.
Bayelsa’s Commitment to Sports and Unity
Representing Governor Diri at the ceremony, Deputy Governor Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo underscored the profound role of sports in fostering peace, unity, discipline, love, and friendship among citizens. He highlighted the Gateway Games in Ogun as an opportunity for athletes to reinforce the national spirit of unity beyond regional and tribal differences.

The governor reaffirmed Bayelsa’s dedication to sports development, citing the state’s impressive performance at the recent Niger Delta Sports Festival in Uyo as proof of its abundant athletic talent.
A Call to Excellence: Bayelsa’s Sports Aspirations
Encouraging athletes to gear up for NSF2025, Governor Diri emphasized the need to surpass the 2022 record, where Bayelsa secured second place in Asaba, Delta State. He stressed that the state is no longer just a participant—it is now a contender for victory.
To reinforce its sports infrastructure, the government remains committed to completing the 25,000-capacity stadium, ensuring Bayelsan athletes compete favorably on a national scale.
Sports as a Tool for Youth Empowerment
Governor Diri reiterated his administration’s belief in sports as a vehicle for youth empowerment, crime prevention, and drug control. He stated:
“Bayelsa has adopted sports as a strategy to steer our youths away from crime and drugs. Every youth engaged in sports cannot be a criminal.”
He noted the growing success of Bayelsan athletes, mentioning that two Bayelsans are currently part of the U-20 national football team, competing in Egypt for the U-20 Africa Championship.
