Nigeria Wrestling stood tall on the global stage at the Senior World Championships held in Zagreb, Croatia, showcasing resilience, talent, and the spirit of champions.

At just 22 years old, Esther Kolawale delivered a remarkable performance in the fiercely competitive 62kg category. After leading for much of her bronze medal bout, she narrowly lost 5–6 to Mongolia’s Purevdorj, securing an impressive 5th place finish in the world. Her achievement is a powerful statement that Nigeria can compete shoulder to shoulder with the very best in international wrestling.

Visa Denials Undermine African Representation

Despite the excitement, Nigeria’s full potential was hindered. Out of seven qualified athletes, only two were able to compete—five were denied Schengen visas. The cited reasons? That athletes fully sponsored by the Federal Government of Nigeria allegedly lacked “sufficient financial means” or “might not return home.” Even Olympians with recent travel history were refused entry.

This unjust barrier affected not only Nigeria but also fellow African nations including Tunisia, Cameroon, and Congo, stripping them of a fair chance to compete and represent their countries on equal footing.

A Beacon of Hope and Determination

In the face of adversity, Nigeria still rose. Esther Kolawale’s performance is more than a personal triumph—it’s a beacon of what lies ahead for Nigerian wrestling. Her courage, skill, and determination reflect the promise of an Olympic future and the strength of a new generation of athletes.

We also celebrate Jumoke Adekoye (59kg) and all our wrestlers who continue to carry the nation’s hopes with pride and perseverance.

Congratulations, Esther, on your outstanding 5th place finish—Nigeria is proud of you!
