The 9th edition of the National Youth Games officially commenced on Friday, August 29, 2025, at the Stephen Keshi International Stadium in Asaba, Delta State, marking the beginning of ten days of intense competition and youth-driven athletic excellence.
The opening ceremony was declared by Mr. Sunday Dare, former Minister of Youth and Sports Development and current Special Adviser to the President on Public Communication, who represented President Ahmed Bola Tinubu. In his address, the President emphasized the Games as a vital platform for discovering future champions who will represent Nigeria on continental and global stages. He also reaffirmed sports as a powerful tool for fostering national unity.
Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, represented by the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor, reiterated the state’s commitment to empowering athletes and enhancing sports infrastructure. The Director General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade, praised the progress made under Chairman Shehu Dikko, describing the Games as a cornerstone for nurturing Nigeria’s next generation of sports stars.
Among the highlights of the ceremony was Team Bayelsa’s spirited participation in the traditional march past. Dressed in their signature navy blue and white colors, the contingent exuded confidence and determination, signaling their intent to make a strong impact in this year’s competition.
Established in 2013, the National Youth Games has grown into a premier sporting event, with over 6,000 young athletes from across Nigeria competing in 37 disciplines. Team Bayelsa, having narrowly missed a podium finish in the previous edition—losing third place to Edo State by a single medal—is entering the 2025 Games with renewed focus and ambition.
As hostilities officially begin, all eyes are on Asaba, where the nation’s brightest young talents will battle for glory, recognition, and the chance to shape Nigeria’s sporting future.
