On Monday, February 17th, 2025, Bayelsa State was abuzz with excitement as part of the celebrations marking the 5th anniversary of Senator Douye Diri’s Prosperity Government. The day’s events included the foundation laying and unveiling of the commemorative plaque for a new 25,000-capacity stadium in Igbogene, Yenagoa L.G.A., performed by former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan GCFR.

Following the groundbreaking ceremony, all roads led to the Sampson Siasia Sports Complex soccer pitch, where the executive arm of government faced off against their legislative counterparts. Governor Senator Douye Diri and his Deputy Senator Lawrence Ehwrudjakpo graced the event as Special Guest of Honour and Guest of Honour, respectively.

The 3 pm match began with high energy, as the executive team quickly asserted dominance. It was no surprise when their captain, Chief Baraladei Daniel Igali, Honourable Commissioner for Sports Development, scored the first goal, igniting the crowd with his jersey boldly tagged “Champion.”

The game showcased flashes of brilliance from players on both sides, including Honourable Tonyo Ebite and Honourable Ebi Ben Ololo for the executives, as well as Honourable Timi Omubo Agala and Honourable Tari Porri for the legislators.

Resuming play, Honourable Igali stole the show by scoring a second goal, cementing his status as one of the fittest Sports Commissioners Bayelsa State has seen since its creation in 1996. His remarkable performance was reminiscent of his decisive goal in the friendly match against the Ex-pros of Port Harcourt on August 17th, 2024, at the same venue. Igali was rightfully named the MVP of the match.

Notably, the legislative team had previously defeated the executives 1-0 in a similar encounter in 2023, marking the 3rd anniversary of the Prosperity Government.

For the opening encounter of Prosperity Cup Season 7, defending champions Ogboinbiri FC of Southern Ijaw L.G.A. faced the Bayelsa United Feeders. Despite conceding an early goal, Ogboinbiri FC showcased their championship spirit by equalizing in the second half, resulting in a 1-1 draw. Both teams left the field with a well-deserved point each.
