Bayelsa State has stamped its authority on the regional sporting scene, emerging overall champions at the inaugural Niger Delta Sports Festival in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

The state’s contingent dominated the week-long event with a commanding 86-medal haul42 gold, 29 silver, and 15 bronze — outpacing strong contenders Delta and Edo States, who finished second and third respectively.

Commissioner for Sports Development, Hon. Daniel Igali, hailed the athletes for their historic performance, describing the victory as a defining moment for Bayelsa sports.

“Our athletes ran, swam, wrestled, paddled, and fought their way into history,” Igali said. “From thunder on the tracks to brilliance on the mats and in the water, Bayelsa’s sons and daughters embodied the unstoppable spirit of our state — proud, prepared, and poised for greatness.”

Speaking on behalf of Governor Douye Diri, Igali expressed deep appreciation to the entire team — including the Director of Sports, Braveman Wodi, coaches, technical staff, secretaries, and media crew — for their dedication and excellence.

“Welcome home, champions! You’ve made Bayelsa the pride of the Niger Delta. You stood tall at the center of a region shaping a new identity — one beyond oil, fueled by talent, discipline, and drive.”

While celebrating the milestone, Igali called on the team to remain focused ahead of the National Sports Festival, Gateway 2025, set for Ogun State.

“This is a moment to celebrate, but also a call to prepare. We must recover, refocus, and be ready to raise the bar once more on the national stage.”
