Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has thrown his full weight behind Bayelsa United FC, urging the team to aim for the top of the table in the 2025/26 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) and secure a coveted continental ticket.
Governor Diri issued the charge on Sunday after watching Bayelsa United’s first home fixture of the season — a commanding 2–0 victory over Barau FC at the Samson Siasia Stadium in Yenagoa. The win followed an impressive away triumph against Shooting Stars in Ibadan, marking a strong start to the campaign.
“You’ve made the state proud with your performance. Keep this momentum going, and let’s bring continental football to Bayelsa,” the Governor said.
In a gesture of appreciation, Governor Diri announced a ₦2 million reward for the coach and players, praising their spirited display. He also promised the team a brand-new coaster bus if they continue to deliver results and uphold the state’s sporting reputation.
The Governor further expressed confidence in newly appointed head coach Monday Odigie, describing him as a capable tactician with the pedigree to lead the team to success. He directed that Odigie be formally signed on, signaling full endorsement from the state’s leadership.
Bayelsa United now carries the hopes of a passionate football community, with Governor Diri’s backing setting the tone for a season of ambition, unity, and high expectations.
