Azeez Solanke, the number-one ranked player of the Bayelsa State Table Tennis Association (BYSTTA), has been with the association for more than three years, contributing to its growth and success. Recognized for his discipline, talent, and consistency, he has made a significant impact in both national and international competitions, cementing his reputation as one of Nigeria’s top players.
Solanke’s career began with impressive performances at the cadet and junior levels. In 2016, he won a silver medal at the World Cadet Championship, introducing himself on the international stage. He continued his upward trajectory by winning multiple medals at the African Junior Championships in 2017 and 2018. His participation in the World Junior Circuit in 2018 further demonstrated his ability to compete against the world’s best young players.
After transitioning to senior competitions, Solanke quickly became a vital member of the Nigerian national team. In 2019, he and Samuel Boboye—BYSTTA’s captain and second-ranked player—finished as runners-up at the Africa Senior Championship in Cameroon. By 2021, Solanke had secured multiple medals at the African Senior Championships, solidifying his place among the continent’s elite players. His contributions in the ITTF Africa Cup and African Games helped Nigeria maintain dominance over competitors such as Egypt and Senegal.
On the national stage, Solanke has excelled at the National Sports Festival. In 2020, he won two gold medals and one silver. He followed that performance with another stellar showing at the 2022 edition, where he earned one gold, one silver, and one bronze. In July 2024, he claimed gold in the men’s singles event at the National Open Competition in Ibadan, further asserting his domestic dominance.
Solanke has also achieved notable breakthroughs on the international stage. In 2018, he represented Nigeria at the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, competing in the singles and mixed team events alongside Esther Oribamise. A major milestone came in 2024 when he became the first African to reach the finals of the World Table Tennis (WTT) Championship, securing a silver medal in men’s doubles. His participation in various ITTF events has continued to raise his profile, signaling potential for even greater accomplishments on the global stage.
In 2024, Solanke’s consistency was again on display when he finished as the first runner-up at the Nigeria Top 16 Player Tournament in Lagos. His journey reflects a blend of talent, discipline, and perseverance, making him a key player for both BYSTTA and Nigeria.

Solanke’s influence extends to his younger brother, Oweifa Solanke, a left-handed player in BYSTTA’s junior team. Oweifa, who was adopted by BYSTTA four years ago, has represented Bayelsa with distinction since then. Along with five other athletes, he will soon begin his university education at Niger Delta University (NDU), where they will continue playing table tennis. To support their development, BYSTTA plans to assign an NIS-certified coach to NDU to provide structured training alongside their academic pursuits.
Azeez Solanke’s journey from a promising cadet to an elite senior athlete highlights his dedication to excellence. As BYSTTA’s number-one ranked player, he serves not only as a model of personal achievement but also as a symbol of the association’s progress. His story inspires younger players, including Oweifa, to aim high and pursue their dreams. With the unwavering support of BYSTTA, Solanke’s future in table tennis looks brighter than ever.
