The curtain has officially fallen on the 22nd National Sports Festival, tagged Gateway Games 2024, which lit up Abeokuta from May 16 to May 30, 2025. Athletes from all 36 states and the FCT competed fiercely, chasing glory and medals across multiple disciplines. Yet, as the dust settles, uncertainty lingers over Team Bayelsa’s final placement on the medals table.

One of the standout innovations of this edition was the inclusion of a select team of gifted young athletes drawn from across the country. Tagged Invited Junior Athletes (IJA), their participation not only added flair to the competition but also offered a glimpse into Nigeria’s sporting future.
The closing ceremony, held at the iconic M.K.O. Abiola Stadium, was graced by the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, who stood in for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Akpabio lauded the festival as a unifying force, proving once again that sport remains a powerful tool for national cohesion.
Host Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun expressed pride in Ogun State’s role, stating that the festival had elevated the state’s national image. Honourable Bukola Olopade, Director General of the National Sports Commission and Chairman of the Main Organizing Committee (MOC), declared Team Delta as the official winner, but left a shadow of ambiguity over the second and third positions — still being reviewed between Bayelsa and Ogun.
Bayelsa had led the medal table through the first week of competition and looked poised for a top-two finish. However, a late surge from perennial powerhouses Team Delta saw the tides shift. As of the final day, Team Delta tallied 126 gold, 100 silver, and 111 bronze medals. Team Bayelsa followed closely with 92 gold, 63 silver, and 72 bronze, while host state Ogun finished with 91 gold, 65 silver, and 71 bronze.
Despite the pending confirmation, Bayelsa’s athletes have every reason to hold their heads high. From dominant wrestling displays to strong showings in swimming and athletics, the team showcased determination, depth, and raw talent.
With Enugu State set to host the 23rd edition, attention now turns to preparations for another thrilling celebration of Nigerian sportsmanship. For Team Bayelsa, the focus is clear: regroup, refine, and return stronger.
