Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has called on sports stakeholders and residents to embrace friendliness, empathy, and community spirit through active participation in sports.
Speaking through his Technical Advisor on Sports, Mr. Alaowei Opukeme, at the Sampson Siasia Stadium in Yenagoa on Saturday, June 28, 2025, during the Olympic Day Run celebration, Governor Diri emphasized that the Olympic spirit transcends competition—it symbolizes global unity, love, and inclusivity.
He reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to empowering youth and strengthening sports development across the state.
Representing the President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), Engr. Habu Ahmed Gumel, Mrs. Emem Eden Ikhaobomeh highlighted the Olympic Day Run as a unifying tradition—bringing together friends, communities, and cultures across Nigeria and beyond.
In his welcome remarks, Director of Sports, Bayelsa State Sports Council, Sir Braveman Wodi, underscored the day’s focus on wellness, fitness, and community bonding through sport.
The event featured an energetic 8km walk from Ekeki Motor Park to the stadium, alongside live demonstrations in Kungfu, Boxing, Langa, Volleyball, and Gymnastics. Dignitaries were also honored with commemorative Olympic Day Run certificates, marking a symbolic close to an event that echoed Bayelsa’s vibrant sporting heartbeat.
