Organizers Applaud Gov. Diri’s Support for Grassroots Football

Bendel Insurance of Benin have clinched the title at the Bayelsa Pre-season Football Tournament, wrapping up a thrilling week of top-tier football in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital. The tournament, which featured some of the finest clubs in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), delivered drama, skill, and a glimpse into the season ahead.
Insurance edged past Warri Wolves in a tightly contested final at the Samson Siasia Stadium, thanks to a fifth-minute strike from former Bayelsa United left-back, Adamu Yazid. The early goal proved decisive, as the Benin Arsenals held firm against a determined Warri Wolves side to seal a 1-0 victory and lift the trophy.
This win marks a redemption arc for Bendel Insurance, who narrowly missed out on the title last year after a penalty shootout loss to Bayelsa United. Head Coach Greg Ikhenoba expressed pride in his squad’s performance, noting that the tournament provided a valuable platform for new players to prove themselves ahead of the NPFL season.
“The competition has shown that our players are ready,” Ikhenoba said. “It’s been a great opportunity for the squad to gel and for the new faces to showcase their talent.”
Warri Wolves Head Coach, Napoleon Alumua, remained upbeat despite the loss, praising his team’s progress and readiness for the upcoming league campaign.
“We’ve made significant strides,” Alumua stated. “This tournament came at the right time, and we’re heading into the season with confidence.”
Veteran football administrator and former CAF Medical Committee member, Dr. Peter Singabele, emphasized the developmental value of the tournament.
“There’s no victor, no vanquished,” he said. “Every team benefited from the experience. Bayelsa State isn’t desperate to win—it’s focused on building a strong football culture.”
Tournament Coordinator, Mr. Diseye Nwankwe, echoed that sentiment, revealing that the primary goal was to prepare Bayelsa United for a successful 2025/2026 NPFL season. He praised all participating teams for their professionalism and confirmed that interest in next year’s edition is already growing.
“The Bayelsa Pre-season Football Tournament has come to stay,” Nwankwe declared. “NPFL teams are already reaching out to be part of the next edition. The visibility and impact are undeniable.”
He also extended heartfelt appreciation to Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, Deputy Governor Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, and Commissioner for Sports Development, Dr. Daniel Igali, for their unwavering support in making Bayelsa a thriving hub for sports development.
As Bendel Insurance and Warri Wolves now turn their focus to the NPFL season kicking off next weekend, the Bayelsa Pre-season Tournament has once again proven its value—not just as a competitive showcase, but as a catalyst for growth in Nigerian football.
