Bayelsa State’s remarkable success in sports has been credited to Governor Douye Diri’s unwavering commitment to its development, according to Sir Braveman Wodi, Director of Sports, Bayelsa State Sports Council.

Speaking to journalists in Abeokuta, Ogun State, following the Gateway Games, Sir Wodi emphasized that the governor’s consistent funding and strategic leadership have transformed the sporting landscape, making Bayelsa a major force in Nigerian sports. He described Governor Diri as a blessing, not just to Bayelsa, but to Nigerian sports as a whole.
Teamwork Behind Bayelsa’s Success
Sir Wodi attributed Bayelsa’s thriving sports sector to seamless collaboration between the Governor, Commissioner for Sports Development, Dr. Daniel Igali, and the Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, who oversees sports affairs. This unified effort has enabled sporting associations to flourish, with a strong focus on youth engagement and development.
Grassroots Development & Future Prospects
He further highlighted Bayelsa’s commitment to developing homegrown talent, stating that the state does not rely on poaching athletes but instead invests in structured grassroots programs, including the Bayelsa Future Aces Programme, designed to discover and nurture young athletes.
Sir Wodi also praised Bayelsa athletes, coaches, and management for their resilience and determination at the recent National Sports Festival in Ogun State, acknowledging their efforts despite the challenges. While Bayelsa may have fallen short of the top position, he stressed that the team displayed strong character and fighting spirit.
Looking Ahead
The Odi-born sports administrator urged Bayelsa’s sports community to learn from the Gateway Games experience, maintain focus on growth, and march forward with determination.
With Governor Diri’s steadfast commitment, Bayelsa is poised for even greater success in upcoming national and international sporting events.
