In a moment of triumph for Bayelsa State and Nigerian table tennis, rising star Matthew John has emerged Men’s Singles Champion at the 2025 FISU Trials, securing his place to represent Nigeria at the prestigious Rhine-Ruhr FISU World University Games in Germany.

The highly competitive trials, held at the University of Jos (UNIJOS) from April 4th to 6th, brought together the finest university athletes from across the nation. Amidst intense matches and high stakes, it was Matthew — a product of the Bayelsa State Table Tennis Association (BYSTTA) and a scholarship student at Benson Idahosa University (BIU) — who stole the spotlight with his outstanding performance.
With unrelenting focus and skill, Matthew blazed through the competition to clinch the top spot, solidifying his reputation as one of Nigeria’s brightest young talents in the sport.
In a touching message to his mentor and father figure, Ama-ebi Ebikpolade, Matthew shared his joy:
“Good afternoon Dad. I’m thrilled to share that I won the Men’s Singles Champion of the 2025 FISU Trials! I’m forever grateful for your unwavering support and guidance. This achievement wouldn’t have been possible without you. Thank you for believing in me. Love you!”
Matthew will be joined by fellow Nigerian athlete Samuel Boboye as they don the green and white in Germany from July 16–27, 2025, facing off against the best university players from around the globe.
This monumental achievement is not just a personal victory, but also a reflection of the dedicated work by BYSTTA, the academic and athletic backing from BIU, and the unwavering support from mentors, coaches, and the Bayelsa sporting community.
As Matthew John prepares to fly the Nigerian flag on the world stage, expectations are sky-high — and with his current form, the young champion is ready to make history.
Bayelsa State is proud. Nigeria is watching. The world stage awaits.
