The Bayelsa State Sports Academy delivered an impressive performance at the 5th edition of the Students Power Boxing Tournament, which concluded on March 1, 2025, at the Kings and Queens Arena, Uyo, Akwa-Ibom State. The tournament, held from February 26 to March 1, featured athletes from Rivers, Cross River, Bayelsa, and Delta States competing for glory.

Team Bayelsa shone in the finals, with Tombara Destiny (43kg, male) and Africa Florence (54kg, female) showcasing remarkable skills to secure victories over their Rivers State opponents in their respective weight categories. However, Wisdom Eneghe (51kg, male) narrowly lost to his Rivers State counterpart in a closely contested bout.

Bayelsa State Sports Academy boxing coach, Mr. George Master, expressed his delight with the team’s performance, attributing their success to the Prosperity Government’s unwavering commitment to sports development. He emphasized that this support has played a pivotal role in nurturing future champions.

The Head Coach of the Akwa-Ibom team, Mr. Effiong Asuquo, and his assistant, Mr. Lawrence Ese, commended all participating athletes, particularly Team Bayelsa, for their outstanding potential. They noted that the tournament was conducted with strict adherence to boxing rules and regulations, ensuring a safe and successful competition with no injuries reported.

The accomplishments of Team Bayelsa reflect the ongoing efforts to groom talents and elevate sports excellence in the state. The future certainly looks promising for these young athletes.
