The match began with a shock for the Nigerian side, as a defensive lapse between Florence Alexandra and goalkeeper Monle Omini allowed Comfort Yeboah to fire USFA ahead in just the 2nd minute.
But the Prosperity Girls responded with grit and determination. Thirteen minutes later, Emem Essien rose to the occasion, heading home a precise equalizer into the bottom corner to level the score at 1–1 before halftime.
Coach Hakeem Busari made key tactical changes in the second half, introducing Jennifer Oliver and Dooshima Tarnum, whose presence immediately shifted momentum. Bayelsa Queens piled on the pressure, dominating possession and creating chances.
The breakthrough came in the 62nd minute when Janet Akekoromowei, later named Player of the Match, delivered a clinical finish that beat the USFA goalkeeper and sealed the comeback victory.
Speaking after the match, Coach Busari praised his team’s resilience and attacking intent:
“We deserved the win. My players came out smoking from the first half, creating a lot of opportunities, even though our opponents also had their playing time.”
With the win, Bayelsa Queens advance to the final on Friday, September 5, where they will face tournament hosts Côte d’Ivoire — who, in a twist of fate, are lodged in the same hotel as the Nigerian contingent.
The Prosperity Girls now stand one match away from continental glory, with the hopes of Bayelsa State and Nigeria riding on their shoulders.
