Bayelsa Queens kicked off their playing tour with a thrilling 2-1 comeback victory over Sunshine Queens on Thursday, in a match that showcased grit, resilience, and championship spirit.
Played at the Adeyemi Federal University of Education Sports Complex in Ondo City, the clash was a tale of two halves. After a goalless opening period, the hosts struck first in the 67th minute through Faith Oyewole, whose low shot beat goalkeeper Linda Jiwuaku, handing Sunshine Queens a deserved lead.
But the Prosperity Girls weren’t done.
They rallied back with purpose—Emem Essien’s powerful strike seemed destined for goal before Victoria Lucky of Sunshine Queens heroically cleared it off the line. The equalizer eventually came in the 80th minute, when midfielder Kafayat Mafisere slotted home to level the score.
With the clock ticking into stoppage time, Captain Blessing Ilivieda unleashed a thunderbolt from outside the box to seal a remarkable comeback and send the visiting fans into celebration.
🎙️ Reactions from the Dugout:
Coach Whyte Ogbonda, Bayelsa Queens’ Technical Adviser, commended Sunshine Queens for giving his side a real test:
“Before we came, people said we should play more experienced teams, but I insisted on facing an amateur side that could challenge us—and Sunshine Queens did just that,” he said.
“This match has shown us where to focus our work as we build up to the big stage.”
Sunshine Queens’ Head Coach, Oseni Rafiu, praised both teams:
“It was a solid game. Bayelsa Queens showed why they’re league champions, especially in the closing minutes. My girls gave their best, but the better team won today.”
