Ikenne, Ogun State — Bayelsa Queens kicked off their campaign in the 2025 NWFL Super Six with a crucial 1–0 victory over fierce rivals Rivers Angels on Saturday at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne.

The lone goal of the match came in the 34th minute through a composed finish by Alaba Olabiyi, who timed her run perfectly to meet a brilliant through-ball from Mercy Omokwo. Olabiyi’s clinical strike past Rivers Angels’ goalkeeper Anderline Mgbechi crowned a dominant first-half display by the Prosperity Girls, who showed poise and tactical discipline throughout the opening 45 minutes.

Rivers Angels had a golden opportunity to equalize in the 50th minute when Taiwo Ajibade was brought down in the box by Amblessed Ogbonnaya, resulting in a penalty. However, Ifeoam Ikenokwalu failed to convert as goalkeeper Monle Omini produced a superb save to keep Bayelsa Queens ahead.

The win marked Bayelsa Queens’ second victory in three meetings with Rivers Angels this season, reinforcing their growing dominance in the rivalry.

Looking ahead, Bayelsa Queens will face Nasarawa Amazons — who defeated Naija Ratels 2-1 — in their next group-stage match scheduled for Monday at 9:00 a.m. at the same venue.

Reacting to the win, Technical Adviser Whyte Ogbonda praised his side’s character:

He also acknowledged the support from the Bayelsa State Government, stating that the psychological and financial backing has played a key role in preparing the team:

Bayelsa Queens will look to build on this strong start as they continue their push for NWFL glory.
