Bayelsa Queens suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to defending champions Edo Queens on Thursday morning at the Remo Stars Stadium, Ikenne, in Matchday 4 of the NWFL Super Six — a result that ends their impressive 17-game unbeaten run.
Despite dominating much of the contest, the Prosperity Girls were undone by a 45th-minute strike from Edo Queens substitute Goodness Osigwe, who capitalized on a rare defensive lapse to fire home what proved to be the match-winner.
Bayelsa Queens came agonizingly close to equalizing in the first half when Alaba Olabiyi found herself one-on-one with goalkeeper Ijeoma Uzoma, only for the Edo Queens shot-stopper to pull off a brilliant save. Moments later, the Prosperity Girls struck the woodwork, summing up a frustrating outing in front of goal.
In the second half, Coach Whyte Ogbonda made tactical substitutions in search of a breakthrough, but his side failed to convert a series of promising chances, leaving them without a point from the clash.
Speaking after the match, Coach Ogbonda reflected on the loss:
“Football can be cruel. We dominated and created more chances, but couldn’t make them count. Edo Queens are a quality side and showed why they’re champions. That said, I believe we’ll bounce back strongly.”
Looking ahead, he expressed confidence about their next game:
“We’re still very much in the race. I expect a better showing against Naija Ratels. The girls are hungry, and we’re going to fight for every point.”
Bayelsa Queens now shift focus to their crucial Matchday 5 clash, where they aim to reignite their title hopes in the NWFL Super Six.
