Asaba, Delta State — September 5, 2025
As the curtain nears its close on the 9th edition of the National Youth Games in Asaba, Bayelsa State’s contingent continues to make its mark with spirited performances across multiple disciplines. On Thursday, at the Stephen Keshi International Stadium, Acting Director of Sports, Mr. Andrew Odeinyefa Aye, commended the resilience and determination of Team Bayelsa athletes, while acknowledging the need for further grooming and strategic investment in youth sports development.

Mr. Aye’s remarks came after witnessing a golden moment in Greco-Roman wrestling, where Lucky Okoriye and Believe God Emmanuel clinched gold medals in the 48kg and 55kg male categories, defeating their counterparts from Oyo and Kwara States respectively. The victories added to Bayelsa’s growing medal tally and reinforced the state’s reputation as a rising force in grassroots sports.

“Against all odds, our athletes have given a commendable account of themselves,” Mr. Aye stated. “They’ve triumphed in several events and shown character even in the face of questionable officiating. Their performance reflects the spirit of Bayelsa.”

Flanked by key stakeholders including Mr. Alaowei Opukeme, Technical Adviser to the Governor on Sports; Mr. Bibo Lambert, Head of Planning, Research and Statistics at the Bayelsa State Sports Council; and Coach Blessing Oborududu, Olympic silver medalist and national icon, Mr. Andrew Aye emphasized the importance of post-Games evaluation and athlete development.

He noted that while the results have been encouraging, many of the young athletes require structured grooming, mentorship, and technical support to reach their full potential. He pledged that the Sports Council would prioritize these needs once the contingent returns to Yenagoa, following the tournament’s conclusion on Saturday, September 6.

The Director’s remarks reflect a broader commitment to nurturing talent and building a sustainable sports ecosystem in Bayelsa State — one that not only celebrates victories but invests in long-term excellence.
