As Team Bayelsa gears up for the 2024 National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Governor Senator Douye Diri has issued a rallying call to the athletes: “Go for Gold — and go with honor!”

Speaking at the Samson Siasia Sports Stadium shortly after leading the weekly Prosperity Walk, Governor Diri urged the contingent to not only aim for excellence but to uphold the highest standards of discipline and sportsmanship.

“I know you’re heading to Abeokuta soon,” he said. “Let me remind you — Bayelsa has climbed the ladder: from 4th to 3rd in Benin, then 2nd in Asaba. The only position left now is Number One.”

Governor Diri, a former Commissioner for Youth and Sports, recounted how he laid the foundation for progress in 2006 and commended current Commissioner Hon. Daniel Igali for surpassing that benchmark.

“When I swore in Igali, I challenged him to beat my record — and today, he has. But we’re not done yet. Bayelsa must now stand at the summit.

He encouraged the athletes, coaches, and officials to compete fiercely but respectfully:

“Go there, behave well, stay focused, and return as champions. That’s the Prosperity Way.”

The Governor also took part in the ceremonial kickoff of a novelty football match between the Ijaw Youth Council and the All Stars, held to commemorate Isaac Boro Day 2025 — a symbolic gesture blending sport, unity, and heritage.

With momentum on their side and history within reach, Bayelsa’s quest for National Sports Festival glory is fully underway.
